NYSC Delays N77,000 Allowance Due to Funding Issues

Corps Members Still Receiving N33,000 Stipend

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced a delay in implementing the newly approved N77,000 monthly allowance for corps members, citing funding issues. Despite approving the allowance in July 2024, the federal government paid corps members the previous N33,000 in September, disappointing participants. The intended pay increase to boost financial support for corps members has not yet materialised.

NYSC Director General Addresses Delay

Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, the NYSC Director General, explained in an interview with BBC Hausa that the delay in implementing the new stipend is due to the unavailability of funds. The government approved the pay raise, but it has not released the necessary financial resources to fulfil the commitment. Ahmed reassured corps members, expressing hope that the funds will be provided soon, though no specific timeline was given.

Staff Salaries Also Affected

The delay in financial disbursement has also affected NYSC staff. General Ahmed revealed that many staff members have experienced salary increment delays for the past four to five months.. This has added to the frustration within the organisation, as both staff and corps members await the fulfilment of the promised increase.

Official Confirmation of Pay Raise

The NYSC had initially confirmed the pay increase in a statement, referencing a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, dated September 25, 2024. The letter detailed the new allowance structure for corps members, which was intended to take effect in September. However, with the ongoing funding issues, the increment remains unimplemented.

Widespread Disappointment Among Corps Members

Corps members across the country have expressed disappointment over the delay, as many were relying on the increased stipend to meet their financial needs. The delay has left them in limbo, unsure when the new allowance will be implemented. The prolonged wait has sparked concern among corps members, especially those stationed in areas with high living costs.

Hope for Resolution Amidst Uncertainty

The NYSC remains optimistic that the funds will be released soon despite the delay. The organisation urges corps members to remain patient as it works with the federal government to resolve the funding issues. Meanwhile, the N33,000 allowance will continue, leaving many hoping for a swift resolution to the financial challenges.
