University Considers Waiver Following Suicide Attempt
Following a suicide attempt by a student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, the school has announced plans to support extra-year students struggling academically by offering potential waivers. The university’s Senate Division discussed the matter during a recent meeting, exploring ways to reduce academic pressure on students at risk.
Internal Memo Highlights Compassionate Measures
An internal memo dated November 1, 2024, obtained by PUNCH Metro, revealed that the Committee of Deans met to address the incident. The memo, signed by Deputy Registrar M.S. Oluwajoba, emphasised the need for a supportive environment, advising faculty and departmental boards to foster student well-being and consider compassionate academic measures.
Student Transferred Between Faculties Before Incident
According to the memo, the student, who had transferred from the Faculty of Pharmacy to the Department of Biology Education, attempted suicide on October 16. The case, initially raised by the Dean of the Faculty of Education, prompted university authorities to take decisive action to prevent further incidents and mitigate student stress levels.
University Confirms Decision to Ease Academic Pressure
The university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olanrewaju, confirmed the institution’s intent to prevent future suicide attempts caused by academic stress. In an interview, he explained that the waiver aims to support final-year students with minor academic deficiencies, allowing them to graduate without further delay, provided their degrees remain unaffected.
Acknowledging Student Mental Health Needs
Olanrewaju highlighted the university’s commitment to addressing mental health concerns, especially given the country’s current challenges. He stated that, under the circumstances, OAU aims to “show a human face” in its policies, ensuring no student feels compelled to resort to extreme measures due to academic pressure.
Unofficial but Compassionate Decision
A senior university official clarified that while the decision isn’t formalised, it reflects the university’s compassionate approach. The administration believes this supportive stance could improve students’ academic experience and mental health, reducing stress and fostering a healthier educational environment.
