Alarming Conditions
Resident doctors at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, have raised serious concerns about poor working conditions and a snake invasion. The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) highlighted these issues in a communique after an emergency congress in Osogbo.
Communique Details
The communique, signed by ARD President Dr. Enesi Ibukunoluwa and Public Relations Officer Dr. Abiola Rasheed, outlined ongoing issues. The doctors reported a critical staff shortage, increasing exhaustion, and the non-payment of 14 months’ arrears to 42 doctors. Additionally, newly hired doctors have not been added to the IPPIS payment system.
Demands for Action
The doctors demanded immediate payment of outstanding arrears, inclusion in the IPPIS system, restoration of call meals during duty hours, and refurbishment of call rooms. They also requested the payment of accrued allowances and the reversal of the “No Work, No Pay” policy.
Threat of Protests
The ARD threatened to start protests on July 1, 2024, if their demands are unmet. They plan to take a two-hour break during call hours for meals, and no resident doctor will be available between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. daily until the issues are resolved. An indefinite strike is also on the table if demands remain unaddressed.
Snake Infestation
The communique also highlighted a troubling snake invasion at the hospital. Dr. Rasheed revealed that seven snakes were killed within the last month, primarily at the annex in Ilesa, worsening the already poor working conditions.
Call for Immediate Action
The ARD urged hospital management to address these critical issues promptly to ensure a safe and conducive working environment. The doctors emphasized the urgency of their demands and the potential impact on healthcare delivery if their concerns are not resolved.
