Call for Cultural Integration
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has emphasised the importance of integrating local culture into Nigeria’s democratic framework. Speaking in Abeokuta, Ogun State, during a valedictory service for outgoing Chrisland University Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Chinedum Babalola, he argued that embracing indigenous values can significantly strengthen the nation’s democracy.
Rethinking Democratic Practices
Obasanjo highlighted the need to rethink the existing democratic practices, asserting that Western liberal democracy is failing in Nigeria. He pointed out that African culture prioritises communalism, which encourages collaboration, dialogue, and joint problem-solving. “We must rethink democracy and incorporate our culture,” he stated, critiquing the current democratic model.
Consequences for Wrongdoing
The former president insisted that consequences should exist for wrong actions within governance. He acknowledged that Nigerians occupy key positions globally, urging citizens to take responsibility for their nation’s progress. “Nobody will do it for us; we have to do it for ourselves,” he affirmed, encouraging collective action among Nigerians.
Prominent Nigerians in Global Roles
Obasanjo noted that prominent Nigerians, such as the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Amina Muhammed, and leaders of major African development banks, are making significant contributions. He expressed pride in the achievements of these individuals, stating that they can play vital roles in driving necessary changes in Nigeria.
Tribute to Leadership Excellence
During the event, Obasanjo praised Prof. Babalola as a woman of virtue who demonstrated exemplary leadership throughout her tenure. He acknowledged her contributions to elevating the university’s status and noted her dedication to academic excellence, which has positioned Chrisland University among Nigeria’s top institutions.
Appreciation and Future Commitment
In her remarks, Prof. Babalola expressed gratitude to the university’s founder, Dr. Winifred Awosika, for her unwavering support. She pledged to remain available to assist the institution whenever her expertise is needed, expressing hope for its continued growth and success.
