Obi Advocates Inmate Empowerment

Promoting Rehabilitation During the Holidays

Peter Obi, former Anambra State Governor, visited the Nigerian Correctional Centre in Onitsha on Christmas Day. He was joined by Archbishop Valerian Okeke, the Grand Patron of correctional centers, to interact with inmates. Obi continued his tradition of celebrating with the less privileged during the holiday season. The visit highlighted the importance of rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates into society.

Skill Acquisition Centre at the Forefront

During his visit, Obi commended the fully operational Skill Acquisition Centre established through Archbishop Okeke’s intervention. The facility equips inmates with various productive skills, enabling them to gain practical knowledge for life after incarceration. Obi emphasized that empowering inmates through skill development is a crucial step toward reducing recidivism and promoting national growth.

Educational Opportunities Behind Bars

Obi praised educational initiatives at Onitsha Correctional Centre, including the NABTEB program and NOUN study center. He called these programs transformative tools that help inmates pursue education and prepare for reintegration.

A Call for Nationwide Replication

Advocating for systemic reform, Obi urged the government to replicate such educational and skill acquisition initiatives across all correctional centers in Nigeria. He highlighted the predominantly youthful demographic of inmates and stressed the importance of preparing them for a productive future through targeted rehabilitation programs.

Gratitude to Archbishop Okeke

Obi expressed deep appreciation for Archbishop Valerian Okeke’s relentless efforts in improving the lives of inmates through education and skill development. He lauded the Archbishop’s contributions as a model for societal intervention and community service.

A Vision for a New Nigeria

Reiterating his belief in human capital development as a cornerstone for national progress, Obi called for greater government and private sector collaboration in reforming correctional facilities. He emphasized that empowering inmates not only benefits individuals but also strengthens society, making “A New Nigeria” achievable.
