Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has bestowed the title of Sports Ambassador upon Tunde Onakoya, a National Chess Master, in recognition of his extraordinary achievements. The appointment follows Onakoya’s remarkable feat of completing a record-breaking chess marathon campaign at New York’s iconic Times Square. This announcement was made during Onakoya’s visit to the governor’s office in Abeokuta on Thursday, where Abiodun also unveiled plans for a state chess competition to honor Onakoya’s accomplishments.
Governor Abiodun expressed deep admiration for Onakoya’s global achievement, praising his unwavering determination, resilience, and hard work. He lauded Onakoya’s efforts in establishing the ‘Chess in Slums Africa’ foundation, which has been instrumental in inspiring youth across Nigeria and offering hope to those in disadvantaged communities. Furthermore, Abiodun revealed his administration’s commitment to promoting chess by initiating the Ogun State Chess Competition, with Onakoya entrusted to oversee its organization from the grassroots to the state level. The competition will include a sponsored Tunde Onakoya Prize for the ultimate winner, aimed at encouraging participation and excellence in chess across the state.
