Ohanaeze Ndigbo Reacts to Federal High Court’s Decision on Nnamdi Kanu’s Bail Request

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a prominent Igbo socio-cultural organization, has responded to Federal High Court’s decision regarding Nnamdi Kanu’s bail request. Justice Binta Nyako, presiding over the case, denied Kanu’s application for bail during a hearing in Abuja.

Since June 29, 2021, Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been in detention under the custody of the Department of State Services.

The court’s decision to deny bail was accompanied by an order for an accelerated hearing of the Federal Government’s seven-count charge against Kanu. For this reason, the case has been adjourned until April 17, 2024, for further proceedings.

In response to this development, Ohanaeze Ndigbo issued a statement through its President-General, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu. The organization urged Nigerian youths to exercise patience and avoid resorting to violence. Additionally, it emphasized that Kanu’s followers should refrain from engaging in activities that promote arson or bloodshed, as Kanu himself does not support such actions.

Dr. Alex Ogbonnia, the national spokesperson for Ohanaeze, reiterated the call for calm and lawful conduct among Nigerian youths. Furthermore, he emphasized that violent reactions should not meet the court’s decision, as it is part of the legal process. Ohanaeze expressed confidence in divine intervention and expressed hope for Kanu’s eventual release from custody.

“Today, Tuesday 19th March 2024 the Federal High Court Abuja deliberated on the case of our Son and Brother Kanu.

After several months in incarceration, Nigerian youths expected that he would receive bail. However, the court adjourned the case until April 17, 2024.

“I wish to appeal to all Nigerian Youths to exercise some patience and avoid any act that would lead to the destruction of life and property. Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has made it very clear on many occasions that he will not support any act of arson or bloodshed.

“We put our trust in the divine providence of almighty God and by God’s grace, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will be free from incarceration very soon. I appeal to everyone to be patient.”

Ohanaeze emphasized Kanu’s opposition to violence, promoting peaceful coexistence, legal avenues for justice, and trust in the legal process.

The organization’s response demonstrates its dedication to fostering peace, legal compliance, and respect for the judiciary amidst ongoing legal matters.
