Ondo NLC Divided Over Leadership Dispute

Controversial Election Sparks Conflict

Two major affiliate unions have divided the Ondo State branch of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) by rejecting the election of Comrade Ademola Olapade as the new chairman. The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) deemed the Thursday election invalid.

Unions Boycott Election

The NUT and NULGE boycotted the election meeting, arguing that the process violated the NLC’s constitution. Consequently, they continue to recognize the former chairman, Victor Amoko, claiming his ongoing leadership adheres to the congress’s constitutional provisions and prior resolutions regarding leadership succession.

Aggrieved Unions Call for Action

Speaking on behalf of the aggrieved unions, the President of Ondo NULGE, Federick Akinrinola, denounced the election as a “kangaroo” process, asserting that it breached the constitutional norms of the NLC. He stressed that the election’s legitimacy is not just about the procedure but about adhering to constitutional mandates about leadership absence and succession.

New Chairman’s Vision Amidst Dispute

Despite the controversy, Comrade Ademola Olapade, the newly elected chairman, expressed his commitment to enhancing worker welfare in Ondo State. He praised Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for his efforts in improving conditions for state workers and pensioners and called for continued progress, including wage reviews and the approval of a new minimum wage.

Potential Split Within the NLC

The leadership dispute poses a risk of a significant split within the Ondo NLC, potentially impacting its 300 affiliate unions. Consequently, if these concerns remain unaddressed, the dissenting unions may depart from the NLC, which would underscore the profound divisions. Therefore, this situation highlights the urgent necessity for a resolution that adheres to the organizational constitution.

Broader Implications for Labour Relations

This conflict within the Ondo NLC underscores the challenges of maintaining unity within large umbrella organizations like the NLC, especially when constitutional processes are in question. The outcome of this dispute could set a precedent for how similar issues are handled in other states, impacting the broader landscape of labor relations in Nigeria.
