Justice K. B. Olawoyin criticized the detention of Naomi Silekunola, the ex-queen of Ooni of Ife, and co-defendants. Naomi, Oriyomi Hazmat, and Abdulahib Fasasi were held in Agodi Correctional Centre since December 24, 2024. The charges stem from a deadly stampede during a Christmas funfair on December 18, 2024. The tragedy resulted in the deaths of 35 children.

The judge clarified the stampede was unintentional, making the defendants eligible for bail. He emphasized ensuring their court appearance. The court imposed strict bail conditions to ensure their return for trial. It also prohibited the defendants from discussing the case publicly, protecting legal integrity.

Following the ruling, Hamzat’s lawyer, Adekunle Sobaloju (SAN), confirmed that the court had granted bail to his client. He expressed optimism that Hamzat would be released from custody promptly after fulfilling the necessary bail conditions. Sobaloju also mentioned that the defense had yet to receive any formal notice regarding the new murder charges filed against the defendants by the state government, only learning about it through social media.

At the Oyo State Magistrates’ Court, the Directorate of Public Prosecutions confirmed establishing a prima facie case. Prosecuting counsel Sikiru Opaleye stated the case was advancing, with charges set to be filed soon. The court adjourned the case until January 27. The prosecution requested additional time for further legal procedures. The case’s legal proceedings are progressing toward trial.
