Oyo State Urban Renewal: Scores of Houses Demolished

The Oyo State Government launched an urban renewal effort by initiating the demolition of numerous structures in Ibadan on Wednesday. This campaign, starting in Fashade community on Tuesday and proceeding along Circular Road, targets about 12 villages in the Ona-Ara Local Government Area, demonstrating the government’s comprehensive urban planning strategy.

Consequently, community leader Abdulfatal Amubikan reported significant losses, stating “about 500 houses have been demolished” during the demolition operation. His claim emphasizes the extensive impact on local communities and showcases the government’s large-scale enforcement of urban development rules.

This considerable figure reflects the profound effect such demolitions have on communities, underlining the government’s commitment to stringent urban planning measures. It highlights the significant scale at which the government is willing to act to implement its urban development strategies.

Addressing Misconceptions and Clarifying Compensation Policies

However, Williams Akinfunmilayo, the state’s Commissioner for Lands, Housing and Urban Development, offered a contrasting account when reached for comment.

“Upon reviewing with the demolition team, he found that they had demolished just over 50 structures near Circular Road and noted that some residents had preemptively removed parts of their homes.” He stated. Akinfunmilayo’s statement aimed to correct exaggerated claims and focused on structures violating established urban development guidelines.

Akinfunmilayo further clarified the government’s stance, stating that the demolition targeted only buildings within 100 to 150 meters of Circular Road. He reassured affected property owners with legitimate documents of compensation, stating,

“Those who have genuine papers should come to the secretariat.”

This policy showcases the government’s commitment to fair urban renewal, ensuring compensation for those affected by demolition near Circular Road.
