The long-awaited revival of the P/Harcourt Refinery seems imminent as it is set to resume operations by year end. The Senate Ad-Hoc Committee investigating the Turnaround Maintenance of Nigeria’s Refineries has announced that operations will recommence before the end of December. The announcement follows collaborative efforts between the Rivers State Government and the Federal Government to revitalize refining capacity.
During a courtesy visit, Governor Fubara reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting initiatives that improve Nigerians’ welfare.
The Senate Committee, led by Chairman Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, discussed collaboration to enhance the Port Harcourt Refinery’s revival.
Governor Fubara emphasized the significance of infrastructure development, citing the ongoing construction of the Woji-Aleto-Alesa-Refinery Road, which will streamline access to the Port Harcourt Refinery and alleviate congestion on the East-West Road.
Governor Fubara emphasized, “The purpose of governance is to make life easy for the people,” expressing optimism that the refinery’s revival would significantly benefit both the Federal Government and Rivers State. He emphasized potential economic benefits like reduced fuel imports, increased revenue, and faster development projects in the state.
Senator Ubah recognized the challenges in the refinery’s rehabilitation and emphasized the historical importance of the Port Harcourt Refinery. He reaffirmed the Senate’s dedication to ensuring the refinery operates efficiently. He emphasized significant progress in refurbishment, nearing 90% completion, with expectations of operations to commence soon.
The timeline for the refinery’s revival has been subject to speculation, with conflicting statements from various stakeholders. However, the Senate Committee’s confirmation of an operational start before year-end brings renewed hope for Nigeria’s energy sector and underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in achieving national objectives.
The Port Harcourt Refinery’s revival aims to boost domestic refining capacity, lessen reliance on imported fuel, and spur economic growth. Stakeholders eagerly watch the refinery’s progress, anticipating its positive effects on Nigeria’s energy security and socio-economic landscape.
