Afikpo, Ebonyi State – Demonstrating his unwavering commitment to education, healthcare, and empowerment as key drivers of development, Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate, visited Mater Misericordiae College of Nursing Sciences in Afikpo, Ebonyi State.
Founded in 1946, this institution has long been recognized as one of Nigeria’s pioneering healthcare training centers. Its Schools of Nursing and Midwifery, established in 1952 and 1953 respectively, have produced thousands of healthcare professionals who continue to serve both locally and internationally.
The college, currently educating about 1,000 students, is undergoing significant infrastructural upgrades. To bolster these efforts, Obi reaffirmed his commitment to collaborate with the institution and made a substantial initial donation of ₦10 million towards the training of Nigerian healthcare professionals.
In his address to the students, Obi underscored healthcare as a fundamental aspect of human development, applauding the vital role of nurses and medical practitioners in the country’s advancement. He urged the students to remain dedicated to their studies, highlighting the increasing global demand for healthcare workers.
Obi also commended the institution’s staff for their dedication and the commendable work they are doing. He expressed gratitude towards the Ebonyi State Government for their partnership with the school, acknowledging their shared goal for the betterment of both the state and the nation.
