Peter Obi Applauds Goodluck Jonathan’s Democratic Contributions at Benin Democracy Day Dialogue

Today in Benin, Peter Obi joined former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and his wife, Patience Jonathan, at the 2024 Democracy Day Dialogue. Organised by The Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, the event attracted various dignitaries and focused on Nigeria’s democratic progress.

Peter Obi expressed his appreciation for Jonathan’s significant sacrifice in deepening democracy by conducting a free, fair, and credible election. This act, according to Obi, was pivotal for the nation’s peace, progress, and future. He emphasised that conducting free and fair elections is the cornerstone of democracy and essential for building a new Nigeria.

Furthermore, Obi acknowledged Jonathan’s immense contributions to education in Nigeria. He highlighted that education is the most fundamental requirement for national development. Sadly, Nigeria ranks low in the human development index, with a human capital score of 0.36, placing it 168th out of 174 countries.

The low ranking, Obi argued, has significantly contributed to Nigeria’s poor socio-economic situation. He pointed out that the current crises in many parts of the country result from the failure to educate the youth and pull people out of poverty in the past. Obi stressed the urgent need to invest in education and poverty alleviation to end the ongoing crises and insecurity.

Moreover, the event saw the presence of notable figures, including the host Governor, H.E. Godwin Obaseki, and his wife, Betsy Obaseki. Additionally, other distinguished guests included former President of Kenya, Mr. Uhuru Kenyatta, former President of Benin Republic, Thomas Boni Yayi, former Vice President of Zambia, Dr. Nevers Mumba, and former Vice President of Nigeria, Namadi Sambo.
