Peter Obi Addresses Heartbreaking Incidents
Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate during the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has expressed profound sorrow over the recent tanker explosions in Niger and Oyo states. The back-to-back incidents, which resulted in significant loss of life and property, have been described by Obi as “painful” and “disheartening.”
Immediate Aftermath and Official Response
The first explosion occurred in Agaie Local Government Area of Niger State, claiming at least 30 lives and causing the death of about 50 cattle. Less than 24 hours later, a similar tragedy struck in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State. Obi took to social media to extend his condolences to the families and governments of the affected states and praised the quick response of safety and emergency agencies.
Mass Casualty and Government Action
Following the explosion in Niger State, the Niger State Emergency Management Agency reported that 48 individuals received a mass burial due to the severe condition of their remains. The Director General, Abdullahi Baba-Arab, noted that additional bodies were recovered during subsequent search and rescue efforts.
Communal and National Mourning
Obi expressed his condolences and called for national reflection on the recurring tragedies affecting the region. “May God comfort the families and all of us who share in the pains of these incidents,” he stated, emphasizing the collective grief shared by the nation.
Calls for Improved Safety Measures
The back-to-back nature of these incidents has intensified calls for stringent safety measures and regulatory oversight within the tanker transportation sector. Stakeholders are urging the government to enforce stricter compliance with traffic and safety regulations to prevent future occurrences.
