Labour Party presidential candidate and former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has voiced strong concerns over President Bola Tinubu’s prolonged absence from Nigeria. Obi questioned the President’s decision to remain abroad while the nation faces multiple economic and social challenges, urging immediate leadership intervention.
Extended Absence Raises Concerns
In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Obi highlighted the troubling reality of both the President and Vice President being out of the country at the same time. He emphasised that Nigeria’s pressing issues, such as hunger and poverty, require urgent attention, making Tinubu’s absence problematic.
Failure to Return as Promised
Obi pointed out that despite promising a 14-day absence, President Tinubu has not returned as scheduled. Obi expressed disappointment, stating that the President should have cut his trip short, given the critical situation at home, and called for more responsible leadership during these trying times.
Criticism of Fiscal Responsibility
Obi also took aim at the President’s fiscal management, criticising the decision to send Vice President Kashim Shettima to Stockholm, Sweden, for a working visit. He questioned the rationale behind the Vice President travelling from Nigeria when Tinubu, who was already in Paris, could have easily made the trip, saving time and resources.
Inefficient Use of Resources
Obi expressed frustration over the inefficient use of state resources, highlighting that the distance between Paris and Stockholm is significantly shorter than the distance between Abuja and Stockholm. He argued that this decision reflected poor judgment, especially at a time when Nigerians are facing severe economic difficulties.
Call for Leadership and Action
Obi urged President Tinubu to demonstrate genuine leadership and fiscal responsibility, stressing that the nation’s current crises demand immediate attention. He called on the government to prioritise the welfare of the Nigerian people by making better decisions and managing the country’s resources effectively.
