Vigilante Commander Arrested
The arrest of the vigilante commander, Felix Nwaobakata, in Rivers State, with two human skulls by the Rivers State Police Command is part of a broader effort to curb vigilante group excesses in the state.
Police Operation in Omoku
Spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko stated that Nwaobakata, leader of the ONELGA Security and Peace Advisory Committee (OSPAC), is also a suspect in the murder of two brothers in Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni LGA. This operation follows numerous complaints about the vigilante group’s activities.
Clashes and Complaints
The police noted that OSPAC members had previously clashed with other security agencies and attacked a police division in Omoku. Nwaobakata’s arrest, along with seven other OSPAC members, follows these incidents and public outcry.
Investigation and Arrests
On May 9, 2024, Alhaji Usman Seleh reported the abduction of a group member by OSPAC. Despite multiple police invitations, Nwaobakata refused to cooperate, leading to his eventual arrest on June 17, 2024.
OSPAC’s Controversial Actions
The OSPAC commander faces charges related to the murder of Collins and Newman Ugorji on allegations of kidnapping. Additionally, another incident involved OSPAC members ambushing and killing a youth leader during a peaceful protest.
Police Commitment to Justice
The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, affirmed the command’s dedication to protecting lives and property. He urged residents to report any abuses by vigilante groups and reassured the public of ongoing efforts to investigate and address these issues.
