Police in Rivers Warn Against Night Travel Ahead of Yuletide

The Rivers State Police Command has issued a stern warning against night travel along two major roads in Ikwerre. As the festive season approaches, the police caution travelers to avoid the Elele-Omerelu and Isiokpo-Elele roads due to rising kidnappings. The warning, delivered by Commissioner of Police Mustapha Mohammed, highlights the growing security concerns in these areas.

Increased Security Measures in Vulnerable Areas

Commissioner Mustapha disclosed that extensive security measures have been implemented on the affected routes to tackle criminal activities. He assured the public that the police have fortified areas from Omagwa to Isiokpo, Elele, and beyond. The police have also secured the boundary with Imo State and the roads leading to Omoku, Elele-Alumini for enhanced safety.

Risks of Traveling After Midnight

Mustapha emphasized that traveling after midnight along these roads has become extremely dangerous, urging road users to limit nighttime movement. He stressed that ensuring the safety of citizens throughout the holiday season is a top priority. The police aim to reduce risks and restore confidence in the safety of these vital routes.

Collaboration with Vigilante Groups to Tackle Crime

In an effort to combat rising criminal activities, the police have engaged local vigilante groups in discussions to find long-term solutions. According to Mustapha, some members of these groups, including the Onelga Security Peace Advisory Committee, have been involved in recent crimes. The police have pledged to work closely with these groups to identify and arrest the perpetrators of these criminal activities.

Former Vigilante Members Involved in Kidnappings

Through ongoing talks with vigilante leaders, the police uncovered that some former members of local security groups have turned to crime. Mustapha confirmed that these individuals, who once fought for peace, now exploit security lapses to carry out criminal activities. The leadership of OSPAC has vowed to cooperate fully to ensure these rogue members are held accountable.

Kidnappings Continue Despite Police Efforts

Despite previous police efforts, including the establishment of checkpoints in 2016, criminal activities like kidnappings have resurfaced along these roads. Victims recently shared disturbing accounts of their abductions, recounting being taken to remote farmlands filled with bodies. This highlights the urgent need for continued vigilance and enhanced security measures to protect travelers during the upcoming festive period.
