Cleric Highlights Leadership Disparity in Economic Hardships
At the Wilson and Yinka Badejo Memorial Lecture in Lagos, Pastor Tunde Bakare criticized Nigerian politicians for their lavish lifestyles. Held at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, the event honored the late Foursquare Gospel Church leaders. Pastor Bakare’s keynote address, themed “Cultivating a Culture of Dialogue,” emphasized the importance of empathy and open communication in leadership. He advocated for a dialogue-based approach to address the nation’s challenges, contrasting it with the prevalent confrontational politics. “Empathy is the bedrock of dialogue,” he remarked, urging leaders to genuinely share the burdens of their people rather than imposing further hardships.

Pastor Bakare emphasized that hunger, transcending religious, tribal, and political divides, calls for an end to divisive governance. He highlighted the universal impact of economic struggles on all communities. The cleric noted that many national crises stem from a fundamental resource battle, often masked by political rhetoric.
Critique of Political Party Ideologies
In a striking critique, Pastor Bakare labeled the APC and PDP as ideologically indistinguishable, challenging their political distinctiveness. He discussed Governor Godwin Obaseki’s shifts between these parties, underscoring the minimal ideological differences. Bakare equated the major parties to “two sides of the same coin,” highlighting their superficial disparities.
Calls for Ideological Clarity and Genuine Governance
The lecture also included a reflection on recent national events, including the #EndBadGovernance protests, with Bakare lamenting the ruling party’s deviation from its founding principles. His call for a return to ideologically driven politics underscored a broader plea for authenticity and principle in governance.
