President Tinubu Three-Month Ban on Public Funded Foreign Trips for Government Officials

In a significant move aimed at curtailing expenses and ensuring focused service delivery, President Bola Tinubu has issued a three-month ban on ministers, heads of agencies, and other government officials from embarking on public funded foreign trips. The ban, which will be effective from April 1, 2024, will initially last for three months.

President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, communicated this directive through a letter addressed to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.

In the letter, Tinubu emphasized the need for responsible fiscal management, especially considering the current economic challenges.

Tinubu expressed concerns about rising travel costs in government and emphasized the need for focused service delivery by Cabinet Members.

Government officials intending to undertake any public funded international trip must seek and obtain presidential approval at least two weeks prior to their departure, as per the directive. This approval process ensures that such trips are deemed absolutely necessary for official duties.

Tinubu’s administration aims to implement cost-saving measures while maintaining efficiency and effectiveness in service delivery, making the temporary ban on public funded international trips part of this effort to reduce governance costs without compromising government operations’ functionality.

The memo issued by the Chief of Staff’s office specifically requests the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to circulate this directive to all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies of the government. The new policy ensures that all relevant stakeholders receive information and actively comply with its requirements.

President Tinubu’s decision reflects a strategic approach to fiscal management and governance, highlighting the administration’s commitment to prudent financial practices and prioritizing resources for essential government functions during challenging economic times.
