Minister’s Concerns
Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, has voiced serious concerns about the misuse of private aircraft for illegal activities, including drug trafficking and money laundering. He highlighted that this illegal operation is thriving within the aviation sector.
Management Meeting Revelations
Speaking at a management meeting in Abuja on Thursday, Keyamo expressed his determination to tackle these illegal activities head-on. Furthermore, he emphasized that this move is part of the Federal Government’s broader effort to clamp down on improperly imported private jets. Consequently, the Nigerian Customs Service has summoned 80 operators to present their aircraft import documents.
Financial and Security Implications
Keyamo noted that these illegal operations cause significant financial losses to the Federal Government and pose serious security concerns. He emphasized that the unchecked operations of private aircraft owners undermine the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority’s regulatory efforts.
Collusion and Corruption
The minister pointed out that some legitimate aircraft operators are colluding with illegal operators, thereby allowing them to use their licenses and certificates for illicit activities. Consequently, this collusion exacerbates the challenge of regulating the aviation sector and ensuring compliance with safety standards.
Task Force Initiation
To combat these issues, Keyamo announced the formation of a ministerial Task Force on Illegal Private Charter Operations. This task force will inventory all private aircraft and Air Operator Certificate (AOC) holders, investigate the persistence of illegal charters, and recommend sanctions and additional measures to regulatory agencies.
High-Profile Selection
Additionally, Keyamo assured that the task force comprises highly reputable and integrity-driven individuals from the aviation industry. He expressed confidence in their ability to address these challenges effectively and ensure the safety and security of the aviation sector.
