Release Nnamdi Kalu for South-East Peace, Kanu Urges Tinubu

Kalu Calls for Kanu’s Release

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene and facilitate the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu. Kalu made the appeal on Wednesday following the inaugural meeting of the House Committee on the South-East Development Commission at the National Assembly in Abuja.

A Political, Not Legal, Solution

Kalu emphasized that addressing Kanu’s detention through political rather than legal means would help de-escalate insecurity in the South-East. He stressed that the continued detention of the IPOB leader was being used as an excuse by violent groups to justify unrest in the region. “We are pleading with the President. He is the Commander-in-Chief, and while we cannot force his hand, we believe a political approach is the best way forward,” Kalu stated.

Impact on Regional Security

The Deputy Speaker argued that Kanu’s release would significantly reduce violence, as groups claiming to act on his behalf would no longer have justification for their actions. “If he is freed, those using his name to commit violent acts will lose their excuse. Security agencies can then focus on those who are truly criminals,” he added. Kalu expressed confidence that resolving this issue politically would create a more stable environment for economic growth and development in the South-East.

The Link Between Peace and Development

Kalu highlighted the negative impact of insecurity on the region’s progress, stressing that sustainable development cannot take place in a volatile environment. He pointed to Tinubu’s commitment to the South-East, particularly his approval of the South-East Development Commission Bill, as a positive step toward addressing the region’s challenges. “You cannot have development in the midst of insecurity. That is why we initiated the Peace in South-East Project, and we believe that resolving Kanu’s case will be a turning point,” he noted.

Acknowledging Tinubu’s Efforts

The Deputy Speaker also commended Tinubu’s inclusive approach to governance, applauding his swift approval of the South-East Development Commission Bill. According to Kalu, previous administrations had failed to pass the bill, but Tinubu’s support demonstrated his commitment to national unity. “The President has shown that the South-East is an integral part of Nigeria. He has done what others could not by signing this bill into law,” Kalu remarked.

A Vision for the Future

Beyond security concerns, Kalu called for greater federal investment in the South-East’s economic potential, particularly in technology, agriculture, and entertainment. He proposed the creation of an “Eastern Valley,” similar to Silicon Valley, where young innovators could thrive. “The South-East has immense talent, and with the right policies, we can unlock opportunities that will drive national progress,” he concluded.
