Advocacy for Political Solution
Bishop Johnson, a retired United States Army Captain, has called for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra. He urged political leaders and freedom fighters to pursue a political solution to ensure justice, equity, and fairness.
Public Appeal
In an open letter titled “Defend Justice, Equity, Fairness for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and Other Prisoners of Conscience,” Johnson appealed for Kanu’s release. This statement came a day after former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar also suggested a political solution for Kanu’s case and the recent killings of soldiers in Abia State.
Kanu’s Detention
Since his arrest in Kenya in June 2021, Kanu has remained in the custody of the Department of State Services. Johnson emphasised that failing to address Kanu’s situation sets a dangerous precedent, risking future repercussions for the nation.
Call for Justice
Johnson highlighted the importance of upholding justice, equity, and fairness, especially in cases involving fundamental rights. He urged political elites to champion these values, warning that inaction could undermine democracy.
National Duty
Johnson argued that it is the responsibility of political leaders to advocate for fair treatment of all individuals, regardless of their background. He stressed that defending the rights of people like Kanu is essential for national growth and stability.
Urgent Action Needed
In his letter, Johnson concluded that ignoring the plight of prisoners of conscience like Kanu is a betrayal of democratic principles. He called on leaders to act swiftly to prevent long-term damage to the country’s democratic fabric.
