Release Nnamdi Kanu, South-East Senators Urge FG

Senators Plead for Kanu’s Release

On Wednesday, South-East senators met with Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), in Abuja to advocate for the release of Nnamdi Kanu. The lawmakers stressed the urgent need for President Bola Tinubu to address the matter.

Impact of Insecurity in the South-East

Addressing judiciary correspondents, the senators lamented the negative effects of the sit-at-home order and ongoing violence in the South-East. They noted that the region’s economy and social life have been severely disrupted due to these continuous attacks.

Economic and Social Stagnation

Led by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, the senators revealed that perpetrators claim the unrest will persist until the release of Nnamdi Kanu. They emphasized that the economic and social stagnation in the region is tied to Kanu’s continued detention.

Appeal to the Attorney General

Abaribe stated, “We met with the Attorney-General to discuss Nnamdi Kanu’s incarceration and its implications for the South-East. We believe his release will help ease the region’s tension and insecurity.”

Kanu’s Willingness to Abide by Conditions

Abaribe disclosed that Kanu, during a visit to the Department of State Service headquarters, agreed to comply with any conditions of his release. The senator highlighted that Kanu’s release could lead to a significant reduction in violence.

Background on Kanu’s Detention

Re-arrested in Kenya in 2021, Kanu faces terrorism charges in Nigeria. Despite pleading not guilty, he remains in DSS custody, with previous bail requests denied. The senators urged swift action to resolve the issue and restore peace in the South-East.
