Second Niger Bridge: FG Installs Solar Lights, CCTV on Bridge

Reinstalling Critical Infrastructure for Safer Travel

In a significant move to enhance security and improve road safety, the Federal Government of Nigeria has reinstalled solar-powered lights, CCTV cameras, and security posts on the Second Niger Bridge. The multi-billion naira bridge, which connects the eastern and western parts of the country, had been plagued by months of insecurity following the vandalism of its street lights shortly after its inauguration by former President Muhammadu Buhari in May 2023. The bridge, which had previously been dark at night, now boasts full illumination, offering both improved safety for commuters and a visually appealing atmosphere for surrounding communities.

Easing Traffic Congestion During the Festive Season

The project aims to ease the perennial traffic congestion at the old Niger Bridge, particularly during the busy festive season. By installing these critical facilities, the government hopes to encourage more drivers to use the Second Niger Bridge, ensuring smoother vehicular movement and reducing pressure on the older bridge. A recent visit by our correspondent confirmed that the solar lights are fully operational, providing a well-lit path from the Delta State axis to the Obosi in Anambra State, enhancing both the safety and convenience of travelers.

Addressing Safety Concerns with New Lighting

For months after its opening, the Second Niger Bridge was under-utilized at night due to a lack of street lights, leading to safety concerns among commuters. The absence of proper illumination, coupled with fears of criminal activity in the dark, deterred many drivers from using the bridge. However, the recent restoration of solar-powered lights has significantly improved security, reassuring drivers and encouraging more people to choose the new bridge as their preferred route, particularly at night.

Public Praise for Government Initiative

Commercial drivers and travelers have expressed their satisfaction with the government’s initiative, highlighting the benefits it has brought to road safety and security. Uche Ifiowu, a transport operator, noted that the illuminated bridge now feels safer to drive on. He emphasized that the newly installed lights have made the road more attractive to commuters, especially during the high-traffic festive season. “This is a great development, and it has definitely reduced the fear of insecurity,” Ifiowu said, praising the timely intervention.

Boosting Local Economies and Commercial Activity

In addition to improving security, the installation of solar lights has contributed to the revitalization of economic activities in the areas surrounding the bridge. Ebuka Nzeobi, Vice-Chairman of the Anambra Drivers Welfare Union, commended the Federal Government for its efforts to enhance both vehicular movement and local businesses. He pointed out that the increased safety and accessibility of the bridge have spurred the opening of new commercial ventures, including restaurants, particularly around the interchange. This development is expected to turn the Idemili and Ogbaru regions into economic hubs in the near future.

Government’s Comprehensive Infrastructure Strategy

The government’s response to security issues on the Second Niger Bridge also includes the installation of CCTV cameras and security posts. Uchenna Orji, Special Adviser (Media) to the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, explained that these measures are part of a broader strategy to improve Nigeria’s infrastructure and ensure safe travel on critical roads. Orji urged local communities to take ownership of the facilities, ensuring their protection against vandalism. He emphasized that the initiative aligns with the government’s economic recovery plans, which include installing solar-powered lights, CCTV, and security posts on all major roads undergoing rehabilitation across the country.
