In a dramatic turn of events that has sent ripples through the political landscape, the Senate leader has vehemently denounced Ningi’s budget padding allegation, describing them as tantamount to a “civilian coup.” This bold statement has ignited a firestorm of discussion among lawmakers, political analysts, and the public alike. Additionally, the Senate Leader, Senator Bamidele claims Senator Ningi seeks Senate President Akpabio’s impeachment without Northern Senators Forum’s endorsement, spotlighting internal discord. Bamidele claims Ningi’s actions echo a failed civilian coup, attempting to use the Northern Senators’ Forum for personal agenda advancement.
Senator Ningi Clarifies Self on the Allegation
Senator Ningi alleged in a BBC Hausa interview that the National Assembly’s N25tn 2024 budget differs from the Presidency’s N28.7tn. However, Ningi clarified in Abuja, denying dual budget accusations but pointed out N3.7tn unaccounted for in a press conference. He went further to say, that he never at any point insinuated that the president is implementing two budgets.
“At no point did I claim that Bola Tinubu harbored bias against the north. The Hausa version confirms this. Never did I assert that Bola Ahmed Tinubu is executing the N25tn budget.”
. “I stated that it’s been conclusively proven that the N25tn has a connection within the budget.”
Senator Bamidele Reacts to Budget Padding Allegation
Senator Bamidele countered Ningi’s budget padding claims as a coup attempt, highlighting a minority’s bitterness towards Senate President Akpabio. Over 60 senators supported Akpabio, indicating majority approval, yet some cling to past election grievances, fueling the controversy.
Bamidele urged Senate unity beyond regional divides for stability and adherence to the Constitution. Additionally, he highlighted the need to address Nigerian needs and safeguard Akpabio’s leadership, signifying a key juncture for the Senate. He cited the infrequency of South-South and South-East Senate presidencies, noting peace in the Senate with leadership rotation away from the South.
In addition, Bamidele highlighted the conflict’s roots in regional dynamics, with Ningi’s unsuccessful bid to use the Northern Senators Forum against Akpabio. He urged Akpabio to enforce Senate rules, viewing the crisis as a chance to maintain legislative integrity and unity.
Lastly, Bamidele’s remarks urge the Senate to transcend personal and regional biases, prioritizing governance and national welfare. This emphasizes the complex politics within Nigeria’s legislature, advocating for adherence to rules amid leadership disputes and regional discord.
Report has it that the Senate had suspended Senator Ningi for three months because of his claims about the budget. Senator Jimoh Ibrahim proposed amending Ningi’s suspension to 12 months, also suggesting a warning for Senator Sumaila Kawu of Kano South.
