Senator Ned Nwoko Advocates for the Creation of Anioma State for the South East

Senator Ned Nwoko has proposed the creation of Anioma state to address the longstanding imbalance in the geopolitical distribution of states in Nigeria. Currently, the South East geopolitical zone has only five states, unlike most other zones which have six or seven. This disparity results in an imbalance of representation and resources, with the South East having only 15 senators compared to 18 in other zones. This inequity affects legislative representation and the fair distribution of national resources, perpetuating a longstanding injustice.

Bill for Anioma State

Senator Nwoko’s bill aims to correct this historical oversight. Anioma comprises nine local government areas, six of which are rich in oil and gas resources. The region also boasts significant human capital, making it a viable and sustainable candidate for statehood. The creation of Anioma state is not just about increasing the number of states but ensuring fair representation and equitable resource allocation for the South East.

Widespread Support

The call for Anioma state has widespread support from various stakeholders. The Anioma socio-cultural group, Izu Anioma, and the Pan Igbo cultural organization, Ohanaeze Indi Igbo, have both been vocal in their advocacy for this cause. Additionally, the political class in Anioma, including traditional rulers led by the late Asagba of Asaba, Obi (Prof) Chike Edozien, have consistently supported the creation of Anioma state. They have held numerous meetings, including discussions with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, to voice their consensus.

Economic and Human Capital Viability

Anioma’s economic and human capital resources further justify its creation as a state. With significant oil and gas deposits and a well-educated populace, Anioma can thrive as a self-sustaining state. The creation of Anioma state would not only enhance the region’s development but also contribute to Nigeria’s overall economic growth

The establishment of Anioma state would mark a significant milestone in Nigeria’s quest for equitable governance.

Call to Action

Senator Ned Nwoko’s proposal for the creation of Anioma state is essential for balancing representation and resource distribution in the South East. This proposal has garnered widespread support and addresses a significant historical oversight. It is time to act and bring Anioma state into existence, ensuring justice and equity for all.
