SERAP Calls Out Tinubu’s Use of Security Agencies
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has issued a stern call to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to halt the use of Nigeria’s security agencies as tools of intimidation against citizens exercising their human rights. This call came in response to growing concerns over the government’s increasing use of force to suppress dissent.
Alarming Trend of Judicial Harassment
SERAP expressed its concern over a defamation lawsuit filed by two Department of State Services (DSS) officials against the organisation. The lawsuit stems from allegations of a security raid on SERAP’s Abuja office. According to the organisation, this is part of a worrying trend of judicial harassment aimed at silencing human rights defenders and activists.
Government Accused of Ignoring Key Issues
Kolawole Oluwadare, SERAP’s Deputy Director, criticised the government for using defamation laws and the DSS to target those demanding accountability. He accused President Tinubu’s administration of neglecting pressing issues such as corruption in the oil sector while focusing on individuals advocating for justice and transparency.
Undermining Democracy and Encouraging Impunity
SERAP warned that the government’s actions not only undermine democracy but also deepen the culture of impunity. They emphasised the importance of allowing activists, journalists, and other citizens to exercise their rights without fear of legal reprisals or intimidation from security agencies.
Call for Government Focus on Corruption and Economic Issues
In their statement, SERAP urged the Nigerian government to shift its attention to more critical matters, including investigating corruption allegations and addressing the recent surge in petrol prices. They warned that the continued targeting of human rights advocates would only serve to further alienate the public.

SERAP’s open letter serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding the rights of citizens in a democratic society. The organisation called on President Tinubu to respect these rights and prioritise the welfare of Nigerians over using security forces as a means to silence criticism.
