Seven Security Personnel Killed in Bandits’ Ambush in Zamfara

Security Forces Ambushed While Preventing Planned Attack

On Thursday, three soldiers of the Nigerian Army and four officers of the Nigeria Police Force lost their lives in an ambush by bandits along the Gusau-Funtua highway in Zamfara State. The joint security team was responding to intelligence about a planned attack on a construction company operating in the area.

Commissioner Confirms Casualties and Details of the Attack

Zamfara’s Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Dalijan, confirmed the incident, stating that the security forces were attempting to thwart an abduction plot targeting staff of Setraco Construction Company. “We had the information; we sent our men, not knowing that they had laid ambush on the road,” Dalijan explained.

Intense Firefight Leads to Loss of Lives

As the security personnel advanced, they encountered heavy gunfire from bandits strategically positioned for a surprise attack. “They opened fire; we exchanged gunfire, and in the process, we lost some army personnel and police personnel too,” the commissioner said. Despite putting up strong resistance, the security team was ultimately overwhelmed.

Highway Blocked and Panic Among Travelers

Prior reports indicated that the bandits had blocked the busy Gusau-Funtua highway for about two hours during the ambush. This caused widespread panic among motorists and travelers, with unconfirmed reports of some individuals being abducted during the chaos.

Commissioner Praises Bravery Amid Rising Insecurity

Despite the tragic loss, Commissioner Dalijan praised the bravery of the troops in confronting the bandits. This incident adds to the growing concerns over escalating insecurity in northern Nigeria, where banditry and kidnappings have become increasingly rampant.
