A violent attack shook the residents of Nimbo community in Enugu State’s Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area on Sunday night, purportedly orchestrated by suspected herdsmen. Eyewitness reports suggest that the assault claimed the lives of at least four individuals and inflicted injuries on numerous others. The assailants allegedly targeted mourners gathered at Ugwuijoro Nimbo, where they mercilessly attacked and fatally wounded their victims.
Chijoke Okunna, a local resident, revealed that as many as seven individuals suffered severe injuries from machete cuts during the onslaught. Among those identified as victims of the attack were Okeh Simon Ugwu, Oruku Okeh Chukwuebuka, Julius Ogbonna Odiegwu, and Gabriel Ugwor Ezea. In the aftermath of the incident, the community mobilized search efforts to locate several individuals who remain unaccounted for.
Upon arrival at Nimbo, a Rapid Response Team dispatched to the scene observed a disturbing sight: the entire area had been deserted, indicative of the pervasive fear and disorder triggered by the violent attack. Enugu State Police authorities confirmed the occurrence of the incident, with DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the command’s spokesperson, acknowledging the assault. However, the police refrained from divulging immediate details, citing the ongoing compilation of information for subsequent release. This latest assault on Nimbo community evokes haunting memories of a similar tragic event in April 2016, when Fulani herdsmen launched a brutal attack on the area, resulting in the loss of lives of at least 14 individuals.
