From a Remote Reservation to the Global Runway
Quannah Chasinghorse, a groundbreaking supermodel and advocate, is redefining beauty in the fashion industry. Born on the Navajo Nation reservation in Arizona, she has carried her rich cultural heritage with her every step of the way. At just 22, she’s become an influential figure in the fashion world, representing both her Native American roots and a progressive shift in the industry’s view on diversity and beauty standards.
Chasinghorse is a proud member of the Oglala Lakota and Hän Gwich’in tribes. Her childhood was anything but ordinary; after moving to Mongolia with her family at a young age, Quannah developed a fascination with fashion. She would watch fashion shows in Mongolia’s capital, Ulaanbaatar, and then pose in family photos, imagining herself as a supermodel. But her early years weren’t filled with the glamour often associated with the fashion world. Instead, Quannah was raised in a cabin with no electricity, learning the values of survival, community, and connection to the land.
Navigating Hardship: From Struggles to Strength
While growing up in rural Alaska, Quannah’s family faced many hardships, including living without stable housing. Despite these challenges, her mother, a fierce land activist, made sure Quannah and her brothers never felt deprived of love or cultural connection. They spent their days attending rallies for Indigenous rights and environmental causes, and learning from their mother how to live off the land. Quannah credits her childhood as being “rich,” but not in the conventional sense. It was rich in traditions, culture, and the tight-knit community that supported them, which fueled her passion for activism.
Quannah was not immune to the difficulties of growing up different. Throughout her youth, she faced bullying for her tall frame and distinct Native features. Yet, these experiences only strengthened her resolve. “Being rich had nothing to do with money,” she reflects. “It was everything to do with culture, traditions, and community.” This mindset laid the foundation for her future success and role as an advocate for her people.
A Breakthrough at Calvin Klein
At 18, Quannah Chasinghorse was discovered at an environmental protest by casting director Shay Nielsen for Calvin Klein. Despite financial barriers, her Indigenous community supported her, enabling her to travel to New York and begin modeling. Her modeling career began after being signed by IMG Models, launching her into the fashion world.
After signing with IMG Models, Quannah quickly found success despite feeling out of place due to her Native features. Designers and photographers were captivated by her unique look, blending traditional Native American features with a modern edge. Chasinghorse became a symbol of cultural pride and activism, gaining recognition in the fashion industry.
Redefining Beauty: Quannah’s Role in Fashion
Quannah has revolutionized the fashion industry with runway appearances for top designers like Ralph Lauren, Gucci, and Tommy Hilfiger. Her activism and distinctive look have also landed her ad campaigns with Stella McCartney and Net-a-Porter. She challenges outdated beauty standards while advocating for Indigenous rights, keeping her heritage visible in high fashion.
A key moment in Quannah’s career was appearing at New York Fashion Week with Ralph Lauren, a controversial brand. Rather than reject them, Quannah engaged in dialogue, leading to Ralph Lauren’s creation of a Native American advisory board. This act showcases her belief in education and conversation as tools for change, not cancellation.
Beyond the Catwalk: Quannah’s Advocacy and Future
Quannah continues her journey, pursuing acting, producing a documentary, and working on a feature film while modeling. She stays connected to her roots, using her platform to uplift Indigenous models and artists while advocating for environmental and Indigenous rights. Quannah is carving a space for cultural representation and sustainability in the fashion industry’s future.
“I want to open up a bigger worldview,” Quannah shares about her mission. Whether modeling, acting, or advocating, she redefines Indigenous supermodels. Her journey proves beauty, culture, and activism can powerfully intersect in the fashion world.
