In a thrilling encounter at the M.K.O Abiola Stadium in Abuja, the Super Falcons of Nigeria secured a crucial 1-0 victory over South Africa in the first leg of the final round of qualifiers for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games football event. Rasheedat Ajibade proved to be the hero for Nigeria as she converted a 43rd-minute penalty, sealing the win for her team.
The Super Falcons started the game strongly, putting pressure on the South African defense from the onset. Despite several attempts, they struggled to find the back of the net until a pivotal moment in the first half. Following a foul on Chinwendu Ihezuo inside the box, Rasheedat Ajibade calmly stepped up to take the penalty and dispatched it past the South African goalkeeper.
Despite their lead, Nigeria continued to push forward in the second half, creating numerous scoring opportunities. However, they were unable to capitalize on their chances due to a combination of wayward finishing and resilient defending from the South African team.
With the first leg victory secured, the Super Falcons will now travel to South Africa for the second leg of the qualifiers on Tuesday. The stakes are high as the winner of the two-legged tie will earn a coveted ticket to compete in the football event at the Paris Olympic Games later this summer.
