Inherited Security Challenges
President Bola Tinubu pinpointed historical injustices as the root of Nigeria’s persistent insecurity, especially in the North West, as he addresses the country’s security issue. Speaking at a two-day security and peace summit organised by the North-West Governors Forum and the United Nations Development Programme in Katsina State, Tinubu highlighted that the country’s banditry and insurgency issues stem from inherited security compromises.
Focus on Mutual Protection
During the summit, Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing Tinubu, reiterated the importance of mutual protection that inspired Nigeria’s formation. He emphasised that the security issues in the North-West affect the entire nation. He stated, “The formation of our great nation was inspired by the need for mutual protection. National security in the North-West is not a sectional agenda.”
Addressing Historical Injustices
Reflecting on his commitment to safety in his inaugural speech, Tinubu outlined the steps his administration has taken. He stressed the need to address historical injustices and reverse institutional weaknesses that contribute to crime. “We must counter the ideological mischief and strengthen our security infrastructure to ensure peace,” he added.
Collaborative Security Efforts
Tinubu highlighted the collaborative efforts between the military and security agencies to tackle the region’s insecurity. He cited operations like Hadin Kai and Safe Haven as instrumental in targeting insurgent groups. Enhanced border security and intelligence capabilities have been pivotal in disrupting criminal networks.
Multifaceted Approach Needed
Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State, chairing the North-West Governors’ Forum, urged a multifaceted approach to combat insecurity. He called for robust intelligence gathering, community policing, and advanced security technologies. He added, “Banditry has disrupted lives and stifled economic activities. We must not let this menace define our region.”
UNDP’s Support for Peace
Elsie Gyekyeua Atafauh, UNDP’s representative in Nigeria, supported the summit’s initiative. She emphasised the importance of peace and security for Nigeria’s development. “If Nigeria must retain the position of a giant of Africa, we must pay attention to the North-West,” she stated.
