Tinubu Appoints Olufemi Oluyede as Acting Chief of Army Staff

Transition Amid Health Concerns

President Bola Tinubu officially appointed Major General Olufemi Oluyede as acting Chief of Army Staff while Lt Gen Lagbaja undergoes medical treatment. Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, announced this in a statement released on October 31, 2024.

Experience and Background

Prior to this appointment, Oluyede served as the 56th Commander of the elite Infantry Corps of the Nigerian Army, based in Jaji, Kaduna. At 56 years old, he has built a commendable military career since being commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1992. Notably, he and Lt Gen Lagbaja are coursemates from the 39th Regular Course, strengthening the continuity of leadership during this transition.

Extensive Command History

Throughout his military career, Oluyede has held numerous significant commands. He served as Platoon Commander at the 65 Battalion and Company Commander at the 177 Guards Battalion. He also commanded the Amphibious Training School. Additionally, he participated in operations such as the ECOWAS Monitoring Group Mission in Liberia and Operation HADIN KAI in the North East.

Army sources confirmed that Lagbaja is receiving treatment abroad and dismissed the death claims as unfounded rumours. They emphasized the importance of public prayers for his recovery during this challenging time.
