Tinubu Approves 40 New Houses for Nigerian Judges

FEC Approves Housing Project for Judges

President Bola Tinubu has approved the construction of 40 houses for Nigerian judges in an upscale neighbourhood of Abuja. Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the FCT, announced the housing project during a Federal Executive Council meeting. They plan to build the houses in the Kantampe district. The project will be completed within 15 months.

Judges to Receive Quarters

Wike revealed that the housing project includes 20 homes for FCT High Court judges, 10 for the Federal High Court. The initiative aims to improve judges’ welfare, who currently live in insecure rented accommodations. These efforts address the inconvenience and insecurity judges face in their current living conditions. The minister explained that the new quarters will provide a safer and more conducive environment for the judges.

President Tinubu’s Concern for Judges

Wike stated that President Tinubu, concerned about the living conditions of judges, specifically directed the prioritisation of the new housing project. “The president was unhappy that judges and justices were living in unsafe rented houses and hotels. He immediately ordered the construction of 40 quarters in the Katampe district,” Wike said, emphasising the project’s urgency.

Access Roads Approved

Wike announced that the FEC approved the construction of access roads leading to the new judicial quarters. They plan to finish the road construction by December, ensuring quick access to the new residential area. Once the houses are built, judges will have easy access to their new quarters.

Salary Increase for Judges

This development follows a 300% salary increase for Nigerian judges, significantly raising the Chief Judge’s earnings to N64 million. The salary hike came after Tinubu’s election and reflects his commitment to judicial welfare. Tinubu’s administration prioritises improving the judiciary’s working conditions through initiatives like this salary boost.
