Tinubu Urged to Leverage Kanu for Security Solutions

Fayose Suggests Strategic Use of Nnamdi Kanu

Isaac Fayose has urged President Bola Tinubu to leverage Nnamdi Kanu for addressing security issues, similar to how former President Goodluck Jonathan utilised Government Ekpemupolo, known as Tompolo, to tackle security challenges in the Niger Delta. According to Fayose, leveraging Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), could help mitigate security challenges in Nigeria’s southeast.

Drawing Parallels with Jonathan’s Strategy

Fayose highlighted that Jonathan’s collaboration with Tompolo significantly reduced militancy and restored peace in the Niger Delta. He believes a similar approach with Kanu could yield positive results. “Jonathan’s partnership with Tompolo was instrumental in addressing the region’s unrest. Tinubu could replicate this success with Kanu,” Fayose stated. Releasing Kanu, he argued, could significantly reduce security spending in the South-East by up to 50%.

Nnamdi Kanu’s Potential Role

Kanu, currently detained by the Nigerian government, commands considerable influence among his supporters. Fayose argues that engaging Kanu in dialogue and negotiations could harness his influence for peace. “Involving Kanu in the security dialogue could turn a potential adversary into an ally,” Fayose noted. This strategy could also demonstrate the president’s good intentions towards the South-East.

Current Security Challenges

Nigeria continues to grapple with various security issues, including insurgency, banditry, and secessionist agitations. Fayose emphasised that innovative and inclusive strategies are necessary to address these challenges effectively. He suggested that Tinubu’s administration should explore all available avenues, including leveraging influential figures like Kanu.

Comparative Success Stories

Fayose cited international examples where governments have successfully negotiated with opposition leaders to achieve peace. He urged Tinubu to consider these precedents. “Other nations have turned the tide on conflict by engaging with opposition leaders. Nigeria can do the same,” he said. Such a pragmatic approach could lead to lasting peace and stability in the South-East.

Call for Strategic Engagement

In conclusion, Fayose called on President Tinubu to adopt a pragmatic approach to Nigeria’s security issues by engaging influential leaders like Kanu. He believes this strategy could pave the way for enduring peace and security in the region. “Constructive engagement with influential leaders like Kanu can pave the way for lasting peace and security,” Fayose asserted.
