In response to alleged destruction of their merchandise, the Tomato Crates Dealers Association of Nigeria is considering cutting off tomato supplies to Lagos State. The association’s National Chairman, Alhaji Ahmed Alaramma, expressed concerns during a press conference held in Zaria.
Alaramma, also serving as the National Secretary of the Amalgamated Union of Foodstuff and Cattle Dealers of Nigeria, highlighted a recent clash at Ile-Epo Market in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State, which commenced on May 1st. He bemoaned substantial financial losses, estimating damage to over 60,000 empty tomato crates.
Initially, tomatoes were transported to southern regions using raffia baskets. However, Alaramma noted that this method caused more damage to the produce, leading to the adoption of plastic crates. He underscored that over 70 association members rent out these crates to tomato dealers nationwide. The recent turmoil at the market disrupted the return process of approximately 60,000 crates to the northern region.
Amid the unrest, Alaramma alleged that “area boys” deliberately set fire to the crates and obstructed efforts by association members to extinguish the flames. He maintained that the association possesses various forms of evidence, including audio-visual materials, to substantiate their claims of destruction and sabotage
