Criticism from the Federal Government Over Obi’s Comments
The presidency criticized Peter Obi, accusing him of politicizing tragic stampedes in Oyo, Anambra, and Abuja. Obi’s remarks, which highlighted the deaths of many Nigerians, including children, sparked harsh criticism from the government. Sunday Dare, the Special Adviser to President Tinubu, called Obi’s comments indecent and opportunistic, claiming he exploited national tragedies for political gain.
Obi’s Response to the Tragedies
The stampedes at a children’s fair in Oyo and rice distribution in Abuja killed at least 67 people. Obi responded on social media, expressing concern over the incidents and calling them systemic failures in Nigeria. He tweeted, “Despite our vast resources, people are dying from hunger and preventable tragedies, highlighting leadership failure.”
Accusations of Insensitivity from the Presidency
However, the presidency was quick to rebuke Obi for his response, accusing him of lacking statesmanship. According to Dare, the former governor of Anambra was engaging in “Aríje nínú Màdàrú,” a Yoruba phrase describing someone who benefits from the misfortunes of others. Dare claimed that Obi’s comments, instead of offering solutions or support, were focused on scoring political points. The government, on the other hand, commended President Tinubu’s actions, including canceling engagements and ordering investigations into the incidents, which they claimed exemplified true leadership.
Obi’s Call for Systemic Change
Despite the criticism, Obi stood firm in his belief that the stampedes highlighted deeper issues within the country. His comments about Nigeria’s mismanagement and neglect of its citizens resonated with many Nigerians who feel that the government has failed to address systemic poverty, inequality, and a lack of basic services. Obi reiterated that the ongoing economic and governance failures had led to a situation where citizens were left vulnerable to such avoidable tragedies.
Government’s Position on National Tragedies
The presidency, in its defense, emphasized that President Tinubu’s response to the tragedies was exemplary, focusing on resolving the issues behind these incidents. Dare stressed that the government was committed to tackling the country’s economic challenges and improving the living standards of Nigerians. The administration, according to Dare, is focused on ensuring that such tragedies do not occur again by addressing the root causes of poverty and inequality in the country.
A Divisive Response in Nigerian Politics
The exchange between Obi and the federal government has further polarized the political landscape in Nigeria. Supporters of Obi argue that his stance on the issues reflects the voice of the common Nigerian, who faces daily struggles due to poor governance. Meanwhile, those aligned with the presidency argue that the focus should be on solutions, not political point-scoring during a national tragedy. As the country grapples with the fallout from these stampedes, the debate over leadership and accountability remains at the forefront.
