Algeria and Niger advanced the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline, transporting gas from Nigeria to Europe. Nigerien Minister Sahabi Oumarou met Algerian officials in Algiers. They reviewed the pipeline’s progress and planned the next steps for its completion. The 4,000-kilometre project is seen as vital to strengthening regional energy security and meeting Europe’s growing demand for natural gas.
High-Level Meeting to Propel the Project
According to Algeria’s Ministry of Energy and Mines, the meeting focused on assessing the current status of the TSGP and tackling any challenges that remain. Algerian Energy Minister Mohamed Arkab announced plans for a high-level meeting involving Algeria, Niger, and Nigeria. This gathering will aim to accelerate the pipeline’s implementation and ensure that all parties remain aligned on their shared goals.
Energy Cooperation Beyond the Pipeline
In addition to the pipeline discussions, Algeria reiterated its support for Niger’s petrochemical sector, particularly in the area of oil refining. The meeting also covered the progress of Sonatrach, Algeria’s national oil company, in its oil exploration efforts within Niger’s Kafra block, located in the northern region of the country. Both nations committed to boosting energy cooperation to strengthen the development of the sector.

The Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline is not only crucial for regional development but also for securing energy supplies to Europe, which has been seeking alternative sources of natural gas.
