Trump Briefed on Iran Assassination Threats, Campaign Claims

Donald Trump’s campaign has revealed that US intelligence officials have warned the former president about assassination threats from Iran. According to the campaign, the threats aim to destabilise the United States and target Trump. These claims come as Trump continues his bid for the Republican nomination in the 2024 presidential election.

Campaign Statement on Assassination Plot

In a recent statement, Trump’s campaign announced that he had been briefed on specific threats from Iran to assassinate him. The campaign linked the threats to Iran’s attempts to create chaos in the US ahead of the election. While the statement did not provide detailed evidence of these threats, it noted that law enforcement agencies are working to ensure Trump’s safety.

Trump Responds to Threats

Donald Trump addressed the issue on social media, stating that Iran had made previous attempts on his life, which failed. He suggested that Iran would likely try again, calling any potential attack a “death wish” for the attacker. He also expressed gratitude to Congress for approving more funding for the Secret Service, further emphasising the seriousness of the threats.

Past Assassination Attempts and Investigation

This briefing follows a July 2024 assassination attempt during one of Trump’s rallies in Pennsylvania. Trump was injured, and another person was killed in the attack, though no direct link to Iran has been made. US media previously reported that intelligence officials had received information regarding a potential Iranian plot against Trump following the incident, but Iranian officials have denied these claims.

Ongoing Security Concerns

In September, another security breach occurred at Trump International Golf Club, where a rifle was spotted by a Secret Service agent. The individual responsible, Ryan Wesley Routh, was charged with attempting to assassinate a presidential candidate. While no evidence links this specific case to Iran, concerns about Trump’s safety continue to grow, with heightened security measures now in place.

Iran’s Denial and Previous Plots

Iran has denied any involvement in the assassination attempts against Trump. However, in 2022, an Iranian national was charged with plotting to kill Trump’s former National Security Advisor, John Bolton, in retaliation for the US strike that killed Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani. As tensions between the US and Iran remain high, Trump’s campaign continues to emphasise the threat posed by Tehran.
