Turkish Football Federation Orders Trabzonspor to Play Six Matches Behind Closed Doors

Trabzonspor Faces Harsh Sanctions After Pitch Invasion

In response to recent violent incidents during a league game between Trabzonspor and rivals Fenerbahce, the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) has issued a stern disciplinary measure against Trabzonspor. The TFF has mandated Trabzonspor to play six home matches behind closed doors as a consequence of the chaotic scenes that unfolded during the encounter last month.

After a group of Trabzonspor fans stormed the pitch following the final whistle of the match on March 17, causing disorder and unrest, the TFF’s disciplinary board also penalized two Fenerbahce players, Dutch defender Jayden Oosterwolde, and goalkeeper Irfan Can Egribayat, with fines and one-match bans for their involvement in the altercation.

Disciplinary Actions Levy Fines and Bans on Players

Oosterwolde received a penalty for kicking a Trabzonspor fan who had intruded onto the pitch with an obscured face. Reports also surfaced of goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic being assaulted by Fenerbahce players and coaching staff during celebrations.

Trabzonspor received financial penalties totaling 3.1 million Turkish lira ($97,000) in addition to the match bans and fines imposed on players. However, Nigerian international Bright Osayi-Samuel escaped punishment despite his involvement in a pitch altercation with a fan.

The TFF’s decision underscores the gravity of the incidents and aims to send a strong message against violence and misconduct in football. The move to play matches behind closed doors serves as a disciplinary measure to ensure the safety and security of players, officials, and spectators.

TFF’s Commitment to Safety and Sportsmanship in Turkish Football

This is not the first time that violence has marred football matches in Turkey, highlighting the need for stringent measures to maintain order and sportsmanship in the sport. Trabzonspor’s history of controversial incidents, coupled with previous episodes of violence in Turkish football, underscores the importance of fostering a culture of respect and fair play within the sport.
