Communities in Uproar Over Farm Killings
Panic has gripped Umunede and Mbiri communities in Ika North-East Local Government Area of Delta State following the fatal shooting of two farmers by suspected herders. The killings, which occurred on Tuesday, have sparked violent reprisals, leading to the destruction of property in the affected areas.
Reprisal Attacks on Settlements
According to local reports, the victims were ambushed along the Idumu-Ikeze Quarters and Mbiri farm settlement roads. In response, enraged youths from Mbiri stormed a settlement in Umunede late Tuesday night, setting fire to makeshift homes and destroying motorcycles believed to belong to the suspected attackers.
Fear Grips Farmers and Residents
A resident who spoke anonymously recounted the events, stating that one of the deceased was on his way to check his cassava plantation when he was gunned down. “These attacks have been ongoing for over two years now. We are afraid to go to our farms for fear of being killed. Every week, farmers are murdered in one community or another,” the source lamented.
Community Leaders Demand Action
Local leaders have called on security agencies to intervene and put an end to the recurring violence. The continuous clashes between farmers and herders have heightened concerns over safety and food security in the region. Residents fear further escalation if urgent measures are not taken to prevent further bloodshed.
Police Confirm Killings, Assure Calm
The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the deaths, stating that an investigation is underway to identify the perpetrators. Police spokesperson SP Bright Edafe said, “Yes, two persons were killed. The community believes the attackers were herders, but investigations are still ongoing. However, calm has been restored in the affected communities.”
Uncertainty Looms as Tensions Simmer
Despite assurances from security agencies, residents remain on edge, fearing possible retaliatory attacks. Many have urged the government to take decisive action to prevent further violence and address the long-standing security challenges in Delta State and other affected regions.
