New Route Strengthens Ties Between Uganda and Nigeria
Uganda Airlines has officially commenced direct flights between Entebbe International Airport and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. The inaugural flight landed in Abuja on Thursday, September 12, 2024, marking a significant milestone in aviation connectivity between the two countries.
Inaugural Flight Welcomed by Nigerian Officials
Dr. Hassan Ejibunu, Director of Air Transport, led Nigerian government officials in receiving the maiden flight. He represented the Minister for Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, during the event. Other dignitaries accompanied him to welcome Uganda Airlines’ inaugural flight to Abuja. Their presence highlighted the importance of this new aviation partnership between Uganda and Nigeria. The launch of the Entebbe-Abuja route aims to promote stronger economic, commercial, political, and social ties between Uganda and Nigeria.
Improved Travel Time and Convenience
Uganda Airlines will operate two weekly flights on Thursdays and Sundays, reducing travel time to approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes. This is a significant improvement over previous indirect routes that could take up to 14 hours, offering greater convenience for travelers between East and West Africa.
Trade and Business Forum Enhances Economic Collaboration
In conjunction with the flight inauguration, Uganda Airlines and the Uganda High Commission hosted the 4th Nigeria-Uganda Trade & Business Forum on Friday, September 13, 2024. The event brought together stakeholders from both nations to explore mutual trade and business opportunities, further solidifying the economic partnership.
Officials Highlight Benefits of Direct Flights
Nelson Ocheger, Uganda’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, highlighted the benefits of the new direct flight service. “This direct flight will not only reduce transport costs but also increase trade, benefit businesses, and create employment opportunities in both Uganda and Nigeria,” Ocheger said. The enhanced connectivity is expected to facilitate trade and strengthen relations between the two countries.
Expansion of Uganda Airlines Destinations
With the addition of Abuja, Uganda Airlines now serves 16 destinations, including Lagos, which was launched in October 2023. The airline’s expansion into Nigeria comes as the Nigeria Air project faces delays, positioning Uganda Airlines to fill a connectivity gap in the region.
