Deployment of Security Forces in Kampala

During the protests, law enforcement detained approximately 60 individuals, including a well-known TV presenter and several protest leaders. Authorities quickly brought these individuals to court and remanded them in custody, demonstrating a swift response to suppress the protests. Lawyers have criticized the rapid nature of these trials, arguing that they undermine the judicial process.
President Museveni’s Stern Warning
Prior to the protest, President Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power for nearly four decades, warned participants that they were “playing with fire.” This statement created a foreboding tone for the government’s approach to handling the protests, organized on social media amid widespread frustration over ongoing corruption allegations involving high-profile officials.

Ugandan police had previously announced that they would not permit the march, citing threats to the nation’s “peace and security.” On the day of the protest, riot police manned roadblocks, and other security personnel sealed off critical roads, particularly those leading to significant government buildings.

Despite the crackdown, public figures and opposition leaders like Bobi Wine have voiced strong support for the protestors. Wine, through social media, praised the courage of those marching against corruption and misrule, emphasizing the brutal nature of the police and military’s response. His comments highlight the deep-seated discontent and the opposition’s role in advocating for justice and systemic change.
