Dr. Richard Montgomery, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, visited Abia State, aiming to strengthen UK-Abia economic ties. During the visit on August 20-21, he engaged in discussions with Governor Alex Otti. The discussions also included other key government and business leaders in Umuahia. This high-level engagement highlights the UK’s interest in fostering economic partnerships with Abia.
Strengthening Economic Partnerships
Dr. Montgomery and Governor Otti discussed collaboration opportunities that could mutually benefit Abia and the UK. The High Commissioner highlighted Abia’s strategic role, expressing enthusiasm for its potential to enhance Nigeria’s economic growth. Promoting Digital Transformation
A key moment of the visit was the graduation ceremony for the State-Level Inclusive Digital Transformation Programme, supported by the UK’s Digital Access Programme. This initiative focuses on closing the digital skills gap among Abia’s civil servants. It equips them with essential digital skills to improve service delivery in the state.
Exploring Industrial and Trade Opportunities
Dr. Montgomery also visited the Geometric Power Company and met with the team behind the Abia Innovation Industrial Park. Additionally, he engaged with representatives from the Aba Chamber of Commerce during an industrial fair showcasing local manufacturers. These interactions were focused on identifying growth opportunities and potential partnerships between UK businesses and Abia’s industrial sector.

Mark Smithson, the UK’s Country Director for Business and Trade, reaffirmed the UK’s support for Abia’s government and private sector. He stressed the significance of continuing discussions and exploring collaborations to enhance trade. The goal is to boost prosperity for both the UK and Nigeria.
