Students’ Distress and Protests
A group of 60 Nigerian students, including those close to graduation, have expressed their distress and disappointment. They argue that despite making significant payments, they have been abruptly locked out of their accounts and withdrawn from their courses. These students have banded together, urging the university to offer more support.
Personal Accounts of Struggle
Adenike Ibrahim, who had paid 90% of her tuition, had her visa revoked just before graduation. Similarly, Esther Obigwe has struggled with depression due to the situation, noting the lack of response from the university to her financial plight. Another student, Jude Salubi, was removed from his course despite paying half of his tuition and working tirelessly to settle the remaining balance.
University’s Stance on Compliance
Teesside University maintains that it is committed to complying with visa regulations and supporting a robust immigration system. The university spokesman acknowledged the financial challenges faced by students and mentioned that customized payment plans had been offered. However, he noted that some students still defaulted on these plans.
Home Office Clarification
The Home Office clarified that visa sponsorship decisions lie with the sponsoring institution. In cases where visas are shortened or cancelled, individuals are advised to regularise their stay or make arrangements to leave the UK. The students continue to seek a resolution to avoid expulsion and complete their education.
