This initiative, unveiled during a press conference on the upcoming National Diaspora Day Celebrations, aims to alleviate the financial burdens facing these students amidst ongoing economic challenges.

The new payment framework allows students close to completing their payments the flexibility to finalize their dues and receive their certificates once fully settled. This approach offer some relief to students significantly affected by financial strains. Dabiri-Erewa emphasized that this measure is not a waiver of fees but a strategy to make the payment process more manageable for the students.

The issue of payment difficulties among Nigerian students in the UK extends beyond Teesside University; it is a widespread challenge affecting many. The NiDCOM is actively collaborating with student organisations and the Nigerian Mission in the UK to address these difficulties comprehensively, in order to extend this relief.

Economic and security concerns driving increased migration have been identified as major factors behind the difficulties faced by Nigerian students abroad. This year’s National Diaspora Day will focus on the ‘Japa Phenomena’ and its implications for national development, highlighting the migration of Nigerian youths and its impact on the country’s labor force and productivity.

The shift in payment plans from seven to three installments by the university significantly strained the students’ ability to manage their finances.
