UN Reaffirms Commitment to Peacekeeping in Lebanon
The United Nations has announced that its peacekeeping force, known as UNIFIL, will remain stationed in southern Lebanon. This decision comes in response to Israel’s repeated demands that the peacekeepers relocate, claiming their presence obstructs military operations against Hezbollah. UN officials emphasised that the peacekeepers are essential for carrying out their mandate and assisting civilians in the conflict zone.
Israel Calls for Removal of Peacekeepers
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged the UN to withdraw its forces from southern Lebanon, alleging that they provide a shield for Hezbollah fighters. Israel has criticised the peacekeeping mission for failing to prevent Hezbollah from building tunnels and stockpiling weapons along the border, a violation of previous agreements.
UN Rejects Israel’s Accusations
The UN has denied accusations that its peacekeepers are hindering military operations or aiding Hezbollah. Jean-Pierre Lacroix, head of the UN’s peacekeeping operations, stated that their mission is to support conflict management efforts, not to enforce military agreements. UN officials also reported recent Israeli attacks on UNIFIL positions, resulting in five peacekeepers being injured.
Tensions Escalate with Continued Strikes
Despite a brief pause in hostilities, the situation in Lebanon remains tense, with Israel resuming airstrikes across the Beqaa Valley and southern Lebanon. Reports indicate that Israel targeted a Hezbollah facility, while Lebanese authorities have confirmed civilian casualties from recent strikes.
UN Stands Firm Amid Rising Pressure
Lacroix reiterated the importance of maintaining the peacekeeping mission, stressing that withdrawal could escalate tensions further. The UN Security Council and member states contributing to the peacekeeping force have expressed their support for the decision to keep UNIFIL in place.
Call for Restraint and Humanitarian Access
The UN has called on all parties involved to exercise restraint and prioritise the safety of civilians. Officials have also urged for unimpeded humanitarian access, noting that the escalating conflict continues to affect vulnerable communities across the region.
