Scheduled Reopening Amidst Resolved Issues
The University of Benin (UNIBEN) reopens on August 11, with conditions for students, after student protests and unrest prompted a closure. On July 4, the university’s management began a temporary shutdown, instructing students to vacate their hostels immediately, according to Public Relations Officer Benedicta Ehanire.
Resolution and Preparations for Resumption
In a Wednesday circular, UNIBEN’s registrar, Ademola Bobola, announced students must return to their halls by Sunday, with lectures resuming Monday. During the shutdown, the university management resolved issues including electricity and water supplies. Renovations to halls of residence were completed, enhancing student living conditions.
Affidavit of Good Conduct Required from Students
As part of the reopening conditions, students must sign an affidavit of good conduct. “The registrar stated that each returning student must swear an affidavit to maintain good conduct during their university stay. This affidavit, outlining key behavioral expectations, must be uploaded to their Kofa page,” the registrar instructed. Additionally, students need to submit a hard copy to their departmental course adviser within two weeks of resuming.
Warnings Against Non-Compliance
Registrar Bobola highlighted the consequences of not following new directives, warning that non-compliance could result in withheld student results. He reassured everyone that measures taken during the closure resolved the issues causing the university’s temporary shutdown.
Call to Students for Smooth Resumption
Bobola encouraged students to carefully note the resumption date and comply with the outlined conditions to avoid any penalties. He expressed confidence in a smooth transition back to academic activities, highlighting the university’s commitment to providing a conducive learning environment.
