UNIBEN Students Protest Blocks Highway

Student Demonstrations Stall Traffic

In a dramatic turn of events on July 3, 2024, traffic on the Benin/Ore highway was brought to a standstill as University of Benin (UNIBEN) students initiated a protest. The students were voicing their frustrations over a persistent power outage at the university’s campuses in Ugbowo and Ekhewan, Benin. This disruption caused significant delays, leaving many commuters stranded.

Rising Electricity Costs Spark Outrage

The root of the unrest lies in an unresolved conflict between UNIBEN and the Benin Electricity Distribution Company regarding a steep increase in electricity bills. The monthly charge for electricity reportedly surged from N80 million to N280 million, compelling the university to switch to generators and limit power usage across its campuses. This drastic measure led to severe reductions in available study time for the students, impacting their academic activities.

Students Demand Action

The protest began early in the morning, with students equipped with placards and chanting for change, blocking the highway. One of the protesters, known only as John, expressed the students’ difficulties, stating, “We only receive one hour of electricity each day since this issue started. It’s impossible to study effectively in such conditions.” The students made it clear they would continue their demonstration until the university took decisive action to resolve the power issue.

Impact on Local Commuters

The blockade not only affected students but also local commuters and businesses. Osas, a driver caught in the disruption, shared his concerns about losing income due to the protest. “This situation has significantly impacted my ability to meet daily targets,” he explained. Meanwhile, other commuters expressed sympathy for the students but were frustrated by the inconvenience caused.

Calls for Resolution

Despite the adverse weather, students remained determined to uphold their blockade until their demands were met. The university’s public relations officer, Benedicta Ehanire, indicated that a senate meeting was currently in session to address the crisis promptly.
