UNIBEN Suspends Student Union Indefinitely

The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has taken a decisive step as it indefinitely suspends its Student Union Government (SUG) following an incident that rocked the institution. The announcement came through a statement issued by the university’s Registrar, Ademola Bobola, on Monday. Students allegedly affiliated with the student union purportedly attacked Olumide Akpata, an Edo State Labour Party candidate, prompting the move. The university has implemented the suspension effective immediately from Monday, April 29, 2024.

A panel investigated events at the Faculty of Law and Senior Staff Club on April 12, 2024. The university management endorsed the suspension based on findings, effective April 29, 2024.

The Vice Chancellor guided the decision to suspend the student union indefinitely following thorough deliberation on the panel’s report.

As part of the suspension measures, the university has directed all officers of the students’ union to surrender any union-owned properties in their possession to the Dean, Students’ Affairs, by 4 pm on Tuesday, April 30, 2024. Additionally, the university has established and approved a Caretaker Committee comprising representatives from various faculties, schools, and institutes to oversee student affairs during this period of suspension. This interim arrangement aims to ensure the seamless continuity of essential student services and activities while the union remains under suspension.

The Vice Chancellor has duly informed the university community of his directive, urging former union officers to adhere to the instructions accordingly.. This decision underscores UNIBEN’s unwavering commitment to fostering a safe and conducive environment for all students, staff, and stakeholders. It emphasizes the paramount importance of accountability and responsible behavior within the student body, as the institution strives to uphold its standards of integrity and academic excellence.
